What is a primary care physician?

A primary care physician is a physician such as a pediatrician, family doctor or general practitioner who provides a broad range of routine medical services.

This is the physician you would normally go to when you are sick. Managed care plans often ask you to choose a PCP from their network of physicians. The name of your PCP may be printed on your insurance card.

The PCP will refer you to a specialist, hospital or other provider if necessary.
